KMS & Banquet

Good afternoon!

Great meet yesterday versus KMS - LOTS of PR's even with the heat. Results are at the bottom of this post.

The banquet is scheduled for 5:30 PM on Wednesday, May 18th. We should be wrapped up by 7 PM. I am aware of an orchestra contest that many athletes will be involved in, if you can make it for dinner we would love to celebrate a great season with our track athletes, families, and coaching staff!

Today's Meet vs. KMS

Good morning!

Looks like we might be lucky, for once, today with the weather. Bob Nunnally from Channel 4 says it will be hot and humid with a chance of a "pop up shower or thunderstorm".

IMPORTANT: Parents please plan to pick your child up at McCord this evening, there will be NO bus back to Worthingway after the meet!

Events list is below:

Worthington Invitational Results & Monday's Invitational at Pickerington

UPDATE: Grizzell results posted in the previous post - thanks to Janet Tischer for the reminder that I forgot to post them. I had them done on Thursday, I swear. ;)

Thank you so much to all of the parent volunteers and team members who helped make the Worthington Middle School Invitational such a HUGE success!! Today's meet went incredibly smoothly which is, combined with impressive performances by the athletes, what makes it the premier middle school meet in Central Ohio.

Results, when available, will be posted to both:
http://www.baumspage.com/trackms/worthington/res11.htm (this is a direct link to the results)
http://onthemarktiming.com/past_results/results.2011/worthingtonms11/ (this is now a direct link to the results)

All participants should TAKE IT EASY SUNDAY! Stay off your feet as much as possible, ice any aches (20 minutes ON, let skin get back to room temperature, 20 minutes ON, repeat), but also it might be good for everyone to do some light jogging (workout any lactic acid build up in muscles) and do some static STRETCHING. Work to get fresh legs for more awesome performances Monday.

Pickerington Invitational - we will keep the same line-up for Monday's rescheduled invitational at Pickerington. We had to make a substitution again today so it is really important to have all of our athletes there. Additionally, we will use their facility to hold an impromptu practice in preparation for our LAST MEET OF THE SEASON at McCord vs. KMS. And...just to clear the air - we will practice WEDNESDAY of this coming week and will have our meet AT MCCORD on THURSDAY. Let me know of any conflicts that arise with meets or practices this week.

Lastly, we are adding ONE additional practice for next Friday. We will use this practice to: (1) Clean up and put away the high jump mats and hurdles. (2) Organize the track closet. (3) COLLECT UNIFORMS. (4) Run to Dairy Queen for some post-season snacks (so bring a few dollars for a treat).

Grizzell, Sells/Karrer Debacle, Subway, Saturday (UPDATED: May 6th - Meet Information)

* Events List for Worthington Invitational: Athletes, both those participating and those not, should plan to arrive at TWHS between 9:15 & 9:30 to begin warming up. The coaches meeting begins at 9:30 so a coach may not be able to meet you right away. We will be setting up out team camp near the shot put ring and the shed that is in that area of the stadium. Please get yourself situated at the team camp then head to the track for 2 warm-up laps and dynamic stretching.

* Grizzell: I still have a smile on my face from what happened at Grizzell yesterday - everyone competed well, the meet went VERY smoothly, and the rain stayed away!
I will post the results here in the next few hours - great job everyone!

* Sells/Karrer Debacle: I am still having an issue with the results from the coaching staff of Sells. We may never get satisfactory results, I am hoping that we will not be competing with them in the future as this has happened two years in a row now. As soon as I get results (or something that looks like results I will post them).

* Subway: The management of our Subway order has changed mid-season, I think the gentleman handling our order had the best intentions in modifying their policy but I can understand the frustration in not recieving what you asked for at the beginning of the season. Please e-mail the gentleman handling our orders directly to express your frustration, maybe we can get things ironed out for our last meet next week with KMS: jkreager23@yahoo.com - by the way his name, Jed Kreager.

* Saturday: The coaching staff is working on the event list for Saturday, there are so many great individual performances we are struggling with placing athletes so they may be both competitive and have the opportunity to score!

Thank you so much to every who has volunteered! I am still short one or two volunteers for the ticket booth - it will be the last shift from 11:30 until 1:00.

Also, I have NO volunteers for the hospitality tent...if anyone is willing the time of greatest need is between Noon and 1 PM.
Also, I have not heard from Karen Fraley about anyone passing along donations. Please see previous posts here about who we would like to contribute and what to contribute!

Lastly, please bring your cameras to the meet - we would like to put together a photo/video montage for the banquet so let's get some pics of our athletes in action. Thanks in advance to Doug Althauser - he is working on editing down his MASSIVE collection of photos to contribute!

As always, any questions send me an e-mail: jstegman@worthington.k12.oh.us

Grizzell Tomorrow/Worthington Invitational Saturday (UPDATE: May 3rd, 5 PM)

* Sells/Karrer:
I am still waiting to receive results from the Sells coach, he is sending them electronically. Everyone did a great job considering the weather yesterday - I had to wear a different pair of shoes this morning because the pair from yesterday were still wet. I know of a few PR's (personal records) that were set despite the conditions - more to come on that when I get the results. Overall, the coaching staff is very pleased!

* Grizzell:
(1) See the events list below!

(2) Volunteers are being secured by Grizzell - woo! But if you have already committed please plan on attending and helping out where necessary.
(3) Directions and map -
Take 161 towards Marysville exit at Avery-Muirfield Drive, turn right.
In about 1/2 a mile turn left onto Avery Rd.
The school is on your left, a little less than 2-1/2 miles. Once you see tennis courts on your left the entrance to the school is the next left.

* Worthington Invitational:
(1) VOLUNTEERS!
We're making progress...it looks like we need to fill a few more positions.
Relay/Exchange Judges and Breakline Judges - these positions are very easy. If you are planning on attending the meet this is a great job so that you can see the events up close. Quick explanation: see if exchanges happen outside the exchange zone, hold a flag if there are (or are not) problems. Breakline judge - 800M and 1600M start in lanes then break at a certain point to lane 1, make sure every does this correctly (not before the cones).

(2) HOSPITALITY
I mis-posted earlier...we would like athletes to provide items according to the list below:
7th grade boys - Case of water
7th grade girls - juice boxes
8th grade boys - cookies
8th grade girls - snacks or granola bars
If you have purchase something using the other list, no big deal - you can bring it to practice when you pick your child up any day this week or to TWHS Saturday before the meet.

(3) PARTICIPANTS
Each team is permitted to have one athlete participate per event plus those on relays. That will leave a good number of athletes out of the mix for Saturday - we NEED all hands on deck to help fill in if we don't have enough volunteers or if volunteers don't show. Those competing in the meet should arrive by 9:15 and begin warming up - we will have a team meeting at 9:45 or immediately as soon as the coaches meeting is finish. Location: TBA.

As always if you have any questions, e-mail (jstegman@worthington.k12.oh.us)!

Dublin Sells/Karrer Update and....VOLUNTEERING! (UPDATE: Monday, 1 PM)

UPDATE: We are OFF the hook (mostly) for volunteering for Wednesday's meet @ Grizzell. I e-mailed with their coach this morning and he said they would be able to cover most events. Karen Fraley, Doug Althauser, Steve Payne, and Al Tischer we would appreciate you still arriving prepared to volunteer just in case a spot needs filled and to assist Grizzell parent volunteers! Thank you!

The volunteer list for Saturday is still looking fairly bare - we need your help with this...please e-mail (jstegman@worthington.k12.oh.us) to sign up!

Also, Karen Fraley updates by informing us that she is available to take food and water donations anytime after practice this week or during the day on Friday if you prefer to bring your item early or cannot bring it Saturday morning. If you have questions or suggestions for Karen you can e-mail her: Str8teeth4U@yahoo.com

Thanks!
End of update.

I just wanted to let parent know that parking at Sells is awful especially with the number of athletes that will be participating. There is limited parking at the school and nearby elementary school, however, there is a public parking lot that can be accessed one street to the east of the school. Quick directions: head north on North High Street/Dublin Road from 161, travel maybe 1/4 mile and turn left onto W. North St. (where the library is), the parking is where the street dead ends. You can access the track by walking across the playground of the elementary school.

Note: the events list for tomorrow has been updated. It should automatically update so keep checking for any last minute changes.

Also, below, you can find our volunteer list for both Grizzell on Wednesday and the Worthington Invitational on Saturday - thanks to all already on the list!!

Weekend Wrap-up & Next Week

The Big Walnut Invitational has come and gone. Saturday was a beautiful day for a track meet and we had 22 individual season bests and 4 season bests by relays - very impressive!! Now we turn and begin to look at the schedule for the first week of May. It will be busy - Monday @ Dublin Sells vs. Dublin Sells and Dublin Karrer; Wednesday @ Dublin Grizzell; and Saturday @ the Worthington Invitational. Spreasheets you will find below: Big Walnut Invitational Results; Season Bests as of the Big Walnut Invitational; and the Events List for Dublin Sells/Karrer (this is incomplete but is continually being updated by coaching staff).

Several things you should know about this week:
(1) Monday @ Sells
This is a "tri-meet" as there are three teams and is a HUGE meet as both of these Dublin middle schools have GIANT teams as a result there may be 200-300 athletes competing in this meet. That means that it will be a long meet (no, not 9 hours). But there may be upwards of a dozen heats of the 100m or 200m so athletes should be prepared to be at Dublin Sells for quite awhile tomorrow evening. I encourage athletes to be prepared for every type of weather as it will get cooler as the meet goes on (that means sweatshirts and long pants) and it may rain (that means wet weather gear). Also, time may permit athletes to get homework done between their events, after all students first, athletes second.

(2) Wednesday @ Grizzell
We are "hosting" this meet and that means VOLUNTEERS! I have commitments from Doug Althauser (shot put or discus) and Karen Fraley (High Jump). Who else is on board? We will need three total volunteers for shot put and discus and two for long jump. Karen informs me that she will handle high jump alone with the help of those competing in the high jump. Lastly, we will need 10 or so volunteers to help with timing and scoring - Coach Mack will guide you so little to no skill is necessary. There will not be nearly the same number of athletes on Wednesday but the speed of the meet is dependent on those who volunteer!

(3) Saturday @ the Worthington Invitational
This meet is a group effort of each of KMS, McCord, and Worthingway so each is coordinating volunteers. McCord is taking care of the hurdle crew. KMS is proving the meet manager, announcer, official scoring, and is staffing judges for the shot put and discus. That leaves Worthingway to find volunteers for long jump, high jump, the ticket booth, and the hospitality tent/booth/area. Further, we will also need to work to stock the hospitality tent. The Worthington Invitational is consider a premier middle school meet in central Ohio as it is electronically timed (like the district, regional, and state HIGH school meets); there are 19 teams participating; and only ONE athlete per team will be participating resulting in an extremely high level of competition.

a. High Jump/Long Jump
The field events begin at 10 AM, volunteers should arrive by 9:45.
Karen Fraley has also volunteered to help with high jump but will need two other helpers for the invitational to help set the bar and judge the event. The amount of time high jump would take is very fluid but should not last more than 4 hours. The girls competition should take less time than boys and there will be a break between the two events for the boys warm up to take place.

The long jump will be "open pit" that means that there will be a limited amount of time for athletes to complete their trials - 2 hours for each gender. If a group finishes early the next group will have a brief warm up period and begin their two hour time block. The longest the three volunteers would be needed is 4 hours.

b. Ticket Booth
We will run the ticket booth in three shifts with two parent volunteers for each shift. This is a fairly straight forward process: adults are $4, students are $2...take money, stamp hand/tear ticket, sell programs, allow spectator through.
Shift 1: 9:30 am - 10:45 am
Shift 2: 10:45 am - 12:00 pm
Shift 3: 12:00 pm - 1:15 pm

c. Hospitality Tent/Booth/Area
Karen is helping to coordinate stocking the hospitality area and has suggested the following:
7th grade boys last name A-J: Case of water
8th grade boys last name K-Z: Juice boxes
7th grade girls last name A-J: Cookies
8th grade girls last name K-Z: Snacks or granola bars
Coaches will be providing fruit for coaches and volunteers.
I am also trying to get a couple of local businesses to provide some entree type items. Subway has committed to providing 20, 6-inch subs. Any other suggestions would be appreciated!
In addition to stocking the hospitality tent we will be providing volunteers to serve food, keep things fresh, etc. We will have two shifts for this with two volunteers per shift. Note the overlap, this is to help set up for the break between preliminaries and finals at 12:30 which will serve as the lunch period for coaches and volunteers.
Shift 1: 10:00 am - 12:15 pm
Shift 2: 12:00 pm - 2:15 pm

Any questions please send me an e-mail: jstegman@worthington.k12.oh.us
