Cardinals vs. Grizzell

Good evening.

I am working on finishing up our line-up right now. I will post it below once it is complete. Most athletes should know the events in which they are competing as made were made aware today during practice. If there are any issues we certainly can take care of them tomorrow prior to the meet.

We are still looking for SEVERAL volunteers, especially to help with field events. See the link below to help out!

Big Walnut Results & This Week's Schedule

Good evening everyone!

Please read this entire post. (If you don't want to read a recap from this weekend skip to "THIS WEEK" below.)

This meet seemed to smell like disaster from the beginning as we had some significant issues getting the team up to the invitational - there were NO BUSES to pick us up. Big shout out to Randy Banks for helping us out with what could have been a nightmare. However tardiness to the meet could not deny...
Absolutely beautiful weather resulted in some AMAZING performances at Big Walnut this weekend. The girls were able to match their performance at this invitational last season coming in 3rd and the boys moved up 4 overall place in 2013 compare to 2012 to also finish 3rd - an awesome accomplishment for all involved! (Full results are located at the bottom of this page.)

Top performers included -

Jada Sleet: 16'-8" in the long jump, 1st place, and a NEW meet record!! An incredible performance on the track as well running a top time in the 100m of 12.86 - she was the number one qualifier into the finals and, in our eyes, was victim of poor judgement in the finals (she was DQ'd due to a false start).

Christina Nash: 5:34.00 in the 1600m, 1st place; 2:33.00 in the 800m, 1st place; and 1st place as a member of the 4x400 relay team. Christina scored the most points of ALL athletes on ALL teams in the invitational (22.5) and although a meet MVP award was not given she most certainly was the most outstanding athlete on Saturday.

Ty Banks: 5:00.00 in the 1600m, 1st place. Ty ran an incredibly physical boys mile on Saturday but was focused as he ran a very tactical race which resulted in both a top finish as well as A CRAZY LOW time. Very few boys locally will run a 5 minute mile this season and Ty still has the potential to go lower!! Coincidentally Ty was also our boys team high scorer as he came in 5th in the 800m and was a member of the 4th place 4x400 team.

In addition to Jada members of the 1st place 4x100 team were Kiara Coleman, Kyra Griffith, and Anastasia Toth. Also, members, other than Christina, of the 1st place 4x400 team  were Kiara Coleman, Hannah Moulton, and Mady Rice.

Overall the Cardinals scored 6 - 1st place performances; 3 - 2nd place performances; a 3rd place performance; 5 - 4th place performances; a 5th place; a 7th place; and 2 - 8th place performances. A very sweet, inspiring, encouraging event. The potential contained within all 30+ participants makes me extremely excited in anticipation for our remaining dual meets (2) and the Worthington Invitational (less than two weeks away).

THIS WEEK:
Our last home meet is against Dublin Grizzell on Wednesday starting at 5 PM. We may be changing up our line-up a bit here and there this week and next to get athletes the opportunity to try events they haven't had a chance to perform in a meet to this point. These dual meets will also be critical for our top athletes in preparation for the Worthington Invitational as we are only able to submit ONE athlete per event - this intrasquad competition is setting up to provide some very entertaining events over the next 10 days.

Please, please, please sign-up to volunteer...we haven't had quite the turn out for field events as we had hoped. Our meets are only able to run smoothly with parents stepping up to help out! See the link below to sign-up!!

THE WORTHINGTON INVITATIONAL:
This event, as I have mentioned, is the premier middle school track meet in central Ohio. We currently have 18 teams registered to compete but we cannot have success on the track without the help of volunteers! If you are nervous to work as a timer, good news, it's an electronically timed meet! We don't need timers! But...we need ticket sellers, field event workers, exchange zone supervisors, t-shirt sellers, and hospitality volunteers among others...Please, I plead, sign up to help out, the link is below:

(UPDATED AGAIN!) Big Walnut Invitational THIS Saturday

Updates:
The buses will be leaving from Worthingway at 7:45 AM, please try to arrive early so we may have an ontime departure.

There is a link to the meet program here: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_bOyeUf0CNPSmpIYXV0R3kyQjQ/edit?usp=sharing

I would strongly recommend AGAINST printing it out (it's 70 pages) maybe just print the pages that apply to you or your athlete. There will be copies available at the meet for $1.50.

Also, athletes: GO TO BED and EAT BREAKFAST!! It is very wise to bring something to eat during the day to keep your energy up there is nothing worse than trying to compete at your full potential when you haven't had anything to eat all day. DON'T FORGET your uniform, tennis shoes, clothes to warm-up in, and your spikes.

Lastly, we should be back at Worthingway between 3 PM and 4 PM, athletes will contact parents either when we are leaving Big Walnut or when we are 5-10 minutes out.

We'll see everyone bright and early!

- Coach Stegman

Cardinals vs. Hastings

Good evening everyone!

It looks like we are in for a beautiful meet tomorrow afternoon. Below is the line-up for tomorrow. Many of you (athletes) may notice that you are "not competing", we missed several of you at practice yesterday for one reason or another - hence why you are not competing. Further, many of you have "RELAY" next to your name, Coach Davis will be working to place you on relay teams for the 4x100 or 4x200 prior to the meet tomorrow afternoon so be ready for that.

Those athletes with the two best times/heights/distances, those chosen to be members of relays teams, and alternates will be chosen and notified for the invitational at Big Walnut on Saturday as soon as we can gather results from the meet tomorrow and look at the best results from this season. If you know you absolutely cannot attend the invitational please e-mail me, Coach Stegman (jstegman@worthington.k12.oh.us), as soon as possible!!

Some quick additional details about Saturday (more to come tomorrow):
Location - Big Walnut High School
Times - 9:15am Field Events Begin (Boys Discus and Long Jump; Girls Shot Put and High Jump); 11am running event prelims begin; Noon running finals begin.

Good evening everyone!

Sorry for the late post. The meet line-up is posted below but before that there are some important things you must know:

* There is an admission fee for the meet at Hilliard Heritage tomorrow of $3 for adults and $1 for students.
* The discus is located outside of the track through an open gate at the north end of the stadium by the softball field.
* Directions (map below)
   - Take 270 W to Cemetery Road (exit 13), turn right onto Cemetery.
   - At the roundabout, continue onto Cemetery Road (which turns immediately into Scioto Darby Rd.)
   - The school is on the right, the track in in the back with parking to the west (near the baseball field)

45th Annual Pickerington Invitational

Good evening everyone!

A great (but chilly) track meet in Pickerington took place today. There were many outstanding performances. Individual results for each and every event can be found at...
Girls: http://www.baumspage.com/trackms/pickerington/ridgeview/2013/2013%20Girls%20Results.htm
Boys: http://www.baumspage.com/trackms/pickerington/ridgeview/2013/2013%20Boys%20Results.htm

This week we will have a meet against Hilliard Heritage, they also competed in the invitational today - it should provide an exciting afternoon of events! Practice for most athletes will be focusing on recovery, technique, and trying new things as there is no invitational scheduled for this coming Saturday.

Please stay up-to-date on the blog as there is some important information I will be passing along to you this coming week.

Pickerington Invitational Line-up

Good evening everyone.

Below is our line-up for the Pickerington Invitational. Any athletes not listed are more than welcome to attend and support our team - it is not out of the realm of possibilities that an alternate (or a teammate just there to cheer everyone along) ends up competing due to unforeseen circumstances.

Our timeline is as follows:
7:45 AM bus departs from Worthingway
9:00 AM coaches meeting at the invitational, camp set up
9:45 AM Field Events begin (boys high jump & shot put; girls longs jump & discus)
10:15 AM Track Events begin (Prelims of 100/110 hurdles, 4x800 relay - final, 100m, 200m)
Noon (approx.) Finals for 100/110 hurdles begin (the meet then follows the order of a weekday meet)
2-3 PM Departure from Pickerington (we hope, we hope, we hope)
3-4 PM Arrival back to Worthingway (we hope, we hope, we hope)

These weekend invitationals are 100% weather dependent, if the meet management thinks the meet can be completed in a reasonable (or unreasonable) time period they will postpone and then restart on Saturday so our arrival back to Worthington could be significantly hastened (due to a well run meet) or delayed (due to weather or a poorly run meet).

Some other things to know:
- Bring your track uniform, spikes, etc. as well as VERY warm clothing. Blankets and sleeping bags are also encouraged as we will be exposed to the elements during the entire 6-8 hours of the meet.
- There is a concession stand, it is not very healthy, so if you prefer to bring a cooler or lunch bag with appropriate lunch and snack items to keep your energy up throughout the meet that is strongly encouraged.
- Invitationals bring the best of the best when it comes to competition and with that comes the responsibility to represent our school and community in a positive light. Positive, appropriate behavior is expected. Those athletes who act inappropriately or in an unsportsmanlike manner will be dismissed from the meet and sent home with their parents.

I know there are several athletes making special arrangements due to band contest at Westland, soccer games in Worthington, and a myriad of other events across Central Ohio. If your athletes name is on this list and you have special circumstances that would require your athlete to meet the team at the invitational or depart early please send me one more e-mail detailing your arrangements.

4/8 UPDATE

Good morning!

Another exciting week is upon us and it looks like the temperatures are improving but, it seems with warmer temps comes rain. The outlook for Wednesday is good, 30% chance of rain last I checked. Please sign-up to help with the meet through Signup Genius, the link is below:
http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0844AFAD2CA64-meet

Also, this Saturday is our first invitational. An information sheet we have received is posted below. The invitational line-up will be announced at practice on Thursday, if your athlete is one of the Top 4 in their event and/or has been participating regularly on an "A" relay team they should plan on competing at the invitational. If you have made plans that can otherwise not be changed please e-mail Coach Stegman ASAP so that arrangements may be made to replace your athlete on our line-up for the invitational.

The rule does require that any visible shirt(s) worn under the top/one-piece uniform by either boys or girls and any other visible apparel worn under the bottoms (the key concept here is visible and includes boxer shorts or any other type of undergarment), must be unadorned and of a single color. Stitching which is contrasting or of a different color to the single, solid color of the undergarment and which functions as the actual seam is legal. Visible items worn under both the tops and the bottoms of a uniform do not have to be the same color. A single manufacturer’s logo/trademark/reference, no more than 2 1⁄4 square inches with no dimension more than 2 1⁄4 inches, is permitted on the top AND bottom of the uniform.

Section 11.7. Additional Restrictions for Relay Races and Cross Country Competition

  • Each team member shall wear the same color and design of school uniform although the length of the bottom or one- piece uniform may vary. If worn by more than one team member, the apparel must be the same color but not necessarily the same length. Any visible shirts (sports bras for girls exempted) worn under the top/one-piece uniform and other visible apparel worn under the bottom/one-piece uniform must be unadorned and of a single color. Stitching which is contrasting or of a different color to the single, solid color of the undergarment and which functions as the actual seam is legal. Visible garments worn under the top/one-piece uniform and/or the bottom/one-piece uniform do not have to be the same color. If worn by more than one team member, that apparel must be the same color but not necessarily the same length."
